UI/UX Design at Mondoo

Mondoo is a cybersecurity product that enables users to quickly fix vulnerabilities across their entire organization. At Mondoo, I worked as a UX designer to help streamline user flows, improve product features, and help make a powerful product beautiful and easy to use.

Below you will find a few examples of projects that I worked on during my time there.

Project
Move the needle dashboard

Goals

  • Broad understanding: Display a “space risk” score that communicates broad risk across your infrastructure

  • Prioritization: Show users which findings should be fixed first to improve security posture the most

  • Tracking: Show progress on fixes that are being worked on

  • Reporting: Show improvement/regression on the space risk over time

Exceptions management

Exceptions are an unfortunate reality of the cybersecurity world. As much as you want your product to be perfectly secure, there will always be exceptions to rules and extremely valid reasons why you would choose not to fix things. Therefore, we needed a robust exceptions management system for security findings at Mondoo.

Goals

  • Actionability: Make it clear to users what needs review (and what doesn’t)

  • Identification: Show who set an exception/where it came from

  • Scope: Context on what kind of exception it is and where it applies

Understanding the lifecycle of an exception

Exceptions have a complex life cycle that starts with their creation, followed by a review process in which they are approved or rejected, and then they can become live exceptions. There can be secondary reviews with extension requests, they can expire, and of course they can be removed. I needed to understand the whole process before being able to communicate it effectively to users.

The exceptions life cycle inferred a “exception status” concept that was turned into labels that could be displayed in the exception tables in the UI.
